How to Sell Your Home Quickly | Stateside Movers

Once you have made the decision to sell your home, you probably want to get it over with as quickly as possible. As long as your house is on the market, you have to keep it super clean and ready to show at all times. Maintaining that kind of order for weeks on end can be stressful, and then there’s the added stress of leaving the house every time you have a showing.

If your next home purchase is contingent on the sale of your current home, you have even more reason to want to sell it quickly. Since you are about to move out, you probably don’t want to invest a lot of money into your house, but there are lots of inexpensive ways you can make your home more appealing to potential buyers. Here are some tips to help you sell your home fast:

Freshen Up Your Home With Paint

Paint brightens up any room for a relatively cheap price. A fresh coat of paint looks clean and fresh, bringing new life to older homes. When choosing colors, keep in mind that you want to make your home appealing to a broad array of buyers. Bright, neutral colors such as white, cream, grey, and beige are better choices than pinks or blues that might not be to everyone’s tastes, even if they are to yours.

Here are a few areas of your house where paint can make a big difference:

Bedrooms: Bedrooms are fairly easy to paint since they don’t usually have any built-in structures or funky corners. If your children have painted their rooms bright or unusual colors, this is a good time to cover up with a neutral color.

Hallways or Entryway: These areas of the house see a lot of wear and tear, especially in homes with children. Look closely and you might see a lot of fingerprints and other smudges. A fresh coat of paint, especially in a light color, can brighten up hallways and entryways.

Kitchen Cabinets: Paint can take years off of dated cabinets, and for a much lower price than new cabinets. Painting cabinets is a lot of work, but the sweat equity will be worth it when you sell your home. Be sure to investigate which type of paint and primer will work best on your cabinets, and take the time to properly clean and prep them before painting.

Countertops: You might be surprised to learn that you can paint countertops, but you can. Many paint companies make specially formulated paints for redoing kitchen and bathroom counters. If your countertops are dated or just plain ugly, a new coat of paint can completely change and improve the look.

Bricks: If your home has a brick fireplace or wall, consider painting the bricks. It’s a popular look right now and can breathe new life into a room. While bricks are beautiful, their dark colors can bring a room down. A coat of bright white or off-white paint lightens up the room while retaining the look of brick.

Deep Clean

You want the people who look at your home to see it at its best, so it has to be spotless. Take the time to clean your house from top to bottom, or hire a cleaning service if you don’t have the time or inclination to do it yourself. Rent a rug cleaner or hire someone to steam clean your rugs. Over time, dirt and grime get ground into carpets. A thorough cleaning can make your rugs and carpets look new.

Declutter

It doesn’t matter how dust-free your furniture is or how much the bathtub sparkles if no one can see past the stacks of unread mail on your kitchen counter. Thoroughly declutter every room in your house. Making your home a blank slate makes it easy for potential buyers to see themselves living there. You will have to pitch the clutter anyway when it’s time for you to move. Doing it now just saves you time later on.

Remove Pets and Pet Items

Create a plan now for how to deal with your pets when it’s time for a showing. A barking dog will annoy potential buyers. You don’t want anyone to walk away from your house in a bad mood. Line up a pet-sitting or dog-walking service or ask a friend or family member to watch your pets for the day. Pack up dog crates, pet food, and pet bowls and set them in the garage or basement during showings.

Minimize Evidence of Your Family

You don’t have to completely remove all evidence that you live there, but it doesn’t hurt to reduce the number of family photos or activity calendars on display while your home is on the market. Remember, you want potential buyers to picture themselves in your home. That can be a little difficult with pictures of you and your loved ones peering out from all over. Go ahead and pack some up now to stage your home for showings. Each of these steps places your home in its best light. Thorough cleaning and a few coats of paint can quickly update your home for a fast sale.
