How to Be Successful as a Real Estate Agent
When the real estate market is hopping, people jump on the bandwagon to become real estate agents. Lots of people think that selling real estate is easy money, but in reality, this job is anything but easy. Real estate absolutely provides the opportunity to make money but only for people willing to put in the time and effort.
If you are thinking of going into real estate, or if you are just starting your career as a real estate agent, you may feel both excited and overwhelmed. Becoming a real estate agent is a big undertaking, but the potential for a lucrative and satisfying career is there if you are ready to work for it. Here are some tips on how to be successful as a real estate agent.
Because our moving company works with a growing number of realtors in different states, we thought this would be a useful article for new and upcoming agents who might come across our website when looking for a good moving company to refer to their clients (thank you for the ongoing referrals - please contact us directly and discover the premiums we offer to agents who work with us).
Learn from a pro
While you have already learned a lot in prepping for your real estate agent test, so much of being an agent comes from on-the-job training. Mentoring from an established agent or broker will give you valuable insight into the day-to-day tasks and challenges of working as a real estate agent. Assisting with another agent's deals will help you prepare to close your own deals.
Choose a great agency
Starting with a great real estate agency will help you with multiple aspects of your career. First, there will be established agents who can mentor you. Take advantage of their expertise and soak up all the knowledge you can. Second, working with an agency gives you credibility even when you are new to the field. You'll get brand recognition before you have built a personal reputation. Additionally, some agencies will provide you with a marketing budget and continuing education courses.
Save your money
Real estate is not a field that comes with a steady paycheck. Expect that it will take you several months to sell or rent enough properties that you draw a significant paycheck. Save your money before launching your career in real estate so that you have something to live off of while you establish yourself as an agent.
Stick to a budget
Even established real estate agents have ebbs and flows to their income. It is simply the nature of the business. Stick to a strict budget year-round so that you are not short on cash in between closings.
Forge and maintain relationships
The real estate business is about selling and renting property, obviously, but it is also about people. Your success as a real estate agent depends on the relationships you create with all kinds of people: buyers, sellers, lawyers, other agents, and so many more. You never know who will provide you with a solid lead or a critical referral. Treat all people with respect and maintain relationships over time. You may be surprised where some of these contacts lead!
Communicate
Part of maintaining relationships is keeping in touch. People expect real estate agents to be available at almost all hours. While you can't take a call while you are in the middle of a showing or a closing, you can call back as quickly as possible. Stay on top of your texts, emails, and voicemails at all times.
Maintain a social media presence
Just like people expect a real estate agent to be available at (almost) all times, they expect agents to be active on social media. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter are great platforms for networking and marketing.
Treat real estate like a full-time job
Even though you may not work typical a typical schedule, treat real estate as a full-time job if you want to make a full-time paycheck. If you are not fully committed to your real estate career, it will show in your results. You will put time into deals that never go anywhere but you will also reap the benefits of the sales that go through.
Set goals
If you don't know where you are going, how will you know when you get there? Set measurable short-term and long-term goals for yourself, then track your progress over time. You may change your goals, but working toward a specific goal will give you a sense of accomplishment.
Become a local expert
Carving out a niche for yourself can open up a new market for you. You might dub yourself the expert on a certain neighborhood or a certain type of home in your area. Of course, you can't just call yourself the expert; you have to put in the time and effort to actually become one. Once you do, you can establish a local following that might last for years.
Becoming a successful real estate agent won't happen overnight, but it can happen. If you are a new real estate agent, take the time to learn from other agents, build relationships, and provide the best service possible to all your clients. If you do, you can build a lasting career in an interesting and exciting field.
