Best Places To Snowbird In Texas - Stateside Movers
Thinking of escaping the chill of the Northern states? Here we have collected some of Texas' ideal snowbird locations.
Snowbirds get the best of both worlds: pleasant summers up north and temperate winters down south. People from all over the country head to Texas for the winter. Texas is so vast that snowbirds can find communities all over the state, in every type of environment. Urban dwellers, country lovers, and beach bums can all find a winter home somewhere in Texas. Here are the best places to snowbird in Texas.
San Antonio
San Antonio is a great place to snowbird for people who love to get outside but still enjoy the perks of a city. It's easy to get outside in this city, where winter temperatures range from a low of 50 to a high of 70. San Antonio has plenty to do outside, from active walking to relaxing driving tours. The city is famous for its River Walk, which stretches throughout the city and is spotted with restaurants, hotels, and shops. Walkers, runners, and strollers frequent the River Walk at all hours, all year-round. Snowbirds can take in its Christmas display of 100,000 lights that decorate the River Walk from the day after Thanksgiving until a few days past the New Year. Golfers will love the 26 golf courses in the greater San Antonio area. For a change of pace, take a drive through the scenic Texas Hill Country, known for its rolling hills and many wineries.
Marble Falls
Marble Falls is another popular snowbird destination in Texas Hill Country. Its climate is similar to San Antonio, with winter highs around 70 degrees and winter lows around 50. Lake Marble Falls, a recommended stop on the Bluebonnet Trail, is a popular site for boating, fishing, and simply enjoying the view. The hills surrounding Marble Falls are known for their wineries and also the only professionally-designed disc golf course in Texas. Marble Falls is conveniently located near the cities of San Marcos, New Braunfels, Austin, and San Antonio, so a day trip is just a short drive away.
Zapata
Zapata is another inland destination for snowbirds in Texas. Located directly on the border of Mexico, right across from the state of Tamaulipas, Zapata draws outdoorsmen from all over. It is home to white-tailed deer, mourning dove, white wing dove, and blue and bobwhite quail. Falcon Lake, the second-largest freshwater lake in Texas, is here in Zapata. The Bass Fishing Clubs voted this lake the #1 bass fishing spot in Texas. Fishermen can fish year-round for black bass, white bass, striper, crappie, and catfish. Birdwatchers come to see white pelicans, cormorants, three types of heron, and the white-collared seedeater. In the fall, birdwatchers can observe the hummingbirds migrate to South America. Winter temperatures in Zapata typically stay between 50 and 70 degrees.
South Padre Island
Beachgoers may choose South Padre Island, an island just north of Mexico known for its beautiful white sand beaches and the sparkling blue water of the Gulf of Mexico. Winter temperatures in South Padre Island range from the mid-50s to the upper 60s. With its gorgeous beaches and pleasant temperatures, South Padre Island draws many people who love outdoor activities. There are a few fishing charters available for fishing in the bay. Other popular choices include boating, parasailing, dolphin watching tours, or if the water is not your thing, renting a golf cart for the day. Just soaking up the warmth of the sun is enough for many snowbirds.
Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is an idyllic winter retreat on the Gulf of Mexico. The city stays relatively warm all winter, with lows of about 50 and highs of about 70. There is something for everyone: miles of white beaches for the beach bums, golf courses for the golfers, the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay for history buffs, or the Selena Museum and the South Texas Music Walk of Fame for music lovers, not to mention the many restaurants and shops for snowbirds who just want to relax. Corpus Christi is home to the world's largest ranch, King Ranch, because everything is bigger in Texas.
Galveston
Galveston, an island about 40 minutes south of Houston, is a great destination for beach lovers and fishermen (and women!). Winter temperatures hover in the 50s and 60s, which isn't quite warm enough for a swim but is just fine for a stroll on the sand and fishing in the bay. East Beach and Stewart Beach are just a few of the many popular beaches in Galveston and host outdoor concerts and many other fun activities. Numerous fishing charters and tours launch out of Galveston, providing fishing opportunities for experienced and novice fishermen alike. Golfers will enjoy the two courses on the island: Galveston Island Municipal Golf Course, which is public, and the Galveston Country Club, which is private. Other things to do in Galveston include shopping, visiting one of its 14 museums, taking in one of its 20 art galleries, or just enjoying a delicious meal at a local restaurant.
With so many options, it's no wonder so many snowbirds head to Texas for the winter. No matter what you are looking for in a snowbird community, you are sure to find it in Texas.
